Exploring Sri Lanka - Hikkaduwa

After what seemed like forever we finally touched down in Colombo. The airport was nicer than expected and we quickly made our way through immigration to change our money.

The Sri Lankan rupee is a closed currency which means you can only exchange money upon arrival. There are plenty of desks in the airport who all claim to offer the best rate. At that point we were too tired to shop around and went to the first desk we came to.

We were greeted by our taxi driver who showed us to our ride. We were so thankful to see a modern looking people carrier with air conditioning and colourful cushions. The roads are CRAZY here! On the main streets there are mopeds, tuk tuks, lorries, cars, busses, bikes and pedestrians all fighting their way down the road. There is a LOT of beeping! I'm not sure how long it took to get to Hikkaduwa as once we were safely out of town and onto the motorway we were both in and out of consciousness.

Finally our taxi ground to a halt and we dodged traffic to make our way across the road and into Main Reef Hotel. The hotel is basic but is perfect for what we need. It sits right on the beach front and we got super lucky with our room.

The staff are really friendly and every morning we are served tea/coffee, yoghurt, fresh seasonal fruit and eggs however you want them.

Other than that we have been eating lots of curry as it's delicious and around 400-500rupees - which is around £2.00-£2.50. One of the best curries we had in Hikkaduwa was at Home Grown Rice and Curry which is hidden down a little side street.

There hasn't been much in the way of surf as it's been too windy, but today I went to my first yoga class since arriving which I'll write about soon.

Tomorrow we are catching a train further down south in search of waves.
